نشأت مدينة البصرة مع الأدارسة، واتضح دورها بعد أفول نجم مدينة فاس في بداية القرن الرابع الهجري / العاشر الميلادي وانفردت بداية من عهد الناصر الأموي وكان موقعها القريب من أموي الأندلس من أهم الأسباب التي جعلتهم يتخذونها قاعدة لهم ونقطة ارتكاز في المغرب الأقصى، خلال صراعهم مع الفاطميين. وبتقلص دولة الأدارسة أصبحت مدينة البصرة القاعدة الثانية للأمراء الأدارسة بعد مدينة حجر النسر، ولعبت مدينة البصرة دورا محوريا جاء ضمنيا أو واضحا أحيانا. كما لعبت مدينة البصرة دورا ملحوطا على الصعيد الاقتصادى، لاسيما في الزراعة والرعى، خصوصا أن المصادر برغم أنها أوجزت في ها الصدد، فإنها أجملت ما يفيد بتفوقها في كليهما، حتيى جاءت أسمائها المختلفة معبرة عن ذلك فضلا عن ذلك فتشهد بقايا المدينة المندثرة باحتراف أهلها للصناعة. أما التجارة فأهلها موقعها على طريق مدينة فاس أن تلعب دورا تجاريا مهما وكانت هناك توأمة بين فاس والبصرة، لذا كان دورها الاقتصادي هو الأول بلا منازع، لاسيما أنخا انتعشت بعد هدمها، بسبب موقعها المتميز الذي أسهم في جذب الاندلسيين والعرب إليها وهذه المدينة التي عاشت أربعة قرون تعرضت للتخريب ثم الاندثار.
